PrivatraVPN is the app we update most often. Under the hood it is a standard OpenVPN client. Most of our effort goes into the parts that usually break: reconnecting after a network change, and keeping traffic blocked while the tunnel is down.
You can use it free with ads. Premium removes the ads and opens the premium servers. You can also unlock premium for a while by watching a short video.
What it does
Smart Connect
Picks a server based on measured latency and load, rather than just the closest one.
Kill switch and auto-reconnect
If the tunnel drops, traffic is blocked until the VPN is back. It reconnects by itself when you move between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
Stealth mode (TCP 443)
Makes VPN traffic look like ordinary HTTPS, for hotel, office and campus networks that block VPNs.
Split tunnelling
Choose which apps go through the VPN, for example to keep out a banking app that refuses foreign IPs.
Per-app data usage
Real numbers for how much data each app used through the tunnel.
Bring your own config
Import up to 20 of your own .ovpn files and use the app as a general OpenVPN client.
Notification controls
Switch server, pause for 15 or 30 minutes (it reconnects by itself), or disconnect, all from the notification.
Privacy Center
Checks whether your email appears in known data breaches, and scans installed apps for suspicious ones.
Your data
Under its privacy policy, PrivatraVPN doesn't log the sites you visit through the tunnel. The app uses Firebase Analytics and Remote Config to track crashes and feature use, and Google AdMob for ads in the free version. Purchases go through Google Play Billing. Questions people ask
Is PrivatraVPN really free?
Yes. The free servers have no time limit and are paid for by ads. Premium removes ads and adds the premium locations. It is sold yearly or as a one-time lifetime purchase through Google Play. Watching a short video also unlocks premium for a while.
My network blocks VPNs. What should I try?
Turn on Stealth mode. It runs the connection over TCP port 443, the same port as normal HTTPS traffic, which gets through most firewalls that block standard VPN ports.
Can I use my own OpenVPN server?
Yes. Import up to 20 .ovpn files and they appear alongside our servers.
Does the kill switch block everything when the VPN drops?
Yes. Traffic is held back while the tunnel reconnects. For a system-wide guarantee, also turn on "Always-on VPN" and "Block connections without VPN" in Android settings.
How do I cancel premium?
Open Google Play, tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → PrivatraVPN → Cancel. Premium stays active until the end of the period you paid for.
